How we spent Miss M's first week of life
Pardon my lack of blogging…something about sleep being a lot more important than posting pictures. Between balancing 3 kids, sleep, and Clay using this computer for his business, my time is limited. I’m sure you understand. Here’s how we spent the first week of Miss M’s life – in pictures. (To enlarge them, simply double click on the picture.)

Birth story
**Warning – while I’ve been discreet, please note that this is a birthing story. Some details may not be appropriate for those who don’t like to think about such things! AND it's forever long...
I’d been having contractions for weeks – some even resembled early labor pains from my other 2. There had been several days that I told Clay and my mom that things seemed different so they might want to be on alert. Nothing ever happened. Frustrating. There was basically nothing to note at my 36, 37, & 38 week checkups. Finally, at 39 weeks, I was a 3!! I was so excited, but tried to remain calm knowing it could still be another week or so. Thursday, August 6th things began to change and I could tell my cervix was softening…I remembered how fast things went with Miss E so I hung close to home, but again I tried to keep everything in perspective. Friday, August 7th I decided the kids and I needed to get out so we had a day full of activity. I was hoping to get things going, but even after playing at the mall, going to the water park, and a birthday party at another splash park NOTHING! Saturday morning I was very uncomfortable. I took a shower because I’d been having some good contractions. I had Clay take one too. We got everything ready just in case…we really felt like it could be any time. The kids were driving us crazy (as I was trying to manage my pain) so we called in Grannylou for reinforcement. After a morning of contractions (even having 4 in 30 minutes), everything got quiet. We ended up having dinner and hanging out with friends that night – contractions still happening without any semblance of regularity.
August 9th – DUE DATE – I had contractions throughout the night (according to Clay, I was moaning a good bit), and recall having multiple ones during the 6AM hour. I decided church wasn’t a good idea, and then Clay decided he probably should stay home too. We watched the clock and the contractions were coming more regularly. It was confusing to me though because they weren’t that intense. I could still talk through them so I didn’t really take them seriously. I had given my mom a head’s up so she could shower in case we needed to go…and we called another friend to see if she could take the kids after church if we needed that. Of course, this day was one that had most of our childcare options with scheduling conflicts! After having three contractions 6 minutes apart, Clay encouraged us to get the plan in motion. I finally agreed recalling how fast things moved with Miss E. Mom headed our way while Clay packed the car. I finished getting the kids ready for church. We headed to the hospital while Mom waited for the Alexanders to get the kids.
I was beginning to wonder if we made a mistake, but then the contractions continued every 5-6 minutes. We arrived at the hospital about 9:15 a.m., and the nurses laughed at my sweet husband who had all of our bags and pillows in his hands. He told them it was our 3rd, and he was pretty sure we were staying. Much less, we came close to not having our cameras with us at Miss E’s birth and we didn’t want to risk it. In observation, the contractions continued and I was dilated to a 4. We were quickly moved to a labor room. It still felt surreal as the contractions weren’t too bad – especially if I was up and moving around. I was ready to get in the shower and utilize the AWESOME jets they have to help with back labor. My nurse mentioned that I could already get my epidural; and after little thought, I told her to bring it on. I couldn’t believe the pain I’d been having would be basically all I had, but I knew I wanted an epidural so there was no sense in risking missing the window of getting one.
I got my epidural about 15 minutes later (the BEST one I’ve had by far), and then my doctor broke my water. I was at a 5 and pretty much fully effaced. Meconium was found so they told me there would be additional NICU nurses in delivery and that I wouldn’t get to hold her right away, but that it usually isn’t something to be concerned about. I think this was all done by like 10:45 a.m. My doctor warned this may be a longer labor since I got my epidural before they broke my water…little did she know! She wanted me to labor a bit before starting pitocin, but I didn’t much care since I felt nothing. Mom, Kristi, and Kadyn came to the room and everyone started getting settled with computers and books and such after we filled them in on all that transpired. I took a moment to put some makeup on and was mentally preparing for killing some time. My doctor came back in to check me and I was at an 8…no, 9…no 9 ½… 10!!! SAY WHAT?!?!?!?!
Everyone quickly packed up their stuff to head back to the waiting room. I looked at Clay and simply said, “Holy crap!” It was all happening so fast. It was supposed to be hours…and now we were looking at pushing! I could hardly wrap my mind around it. Just a few hours earlier I was questioning the serious nature of my contractions. The NICU nurses arrive, everyone was busy preparing things, and the doctor came to check things out one last time (or so I thought). Nope, next things I know she’s saying, “Deep breath and push!” WHAT? NOW? Okay…here we go. The first few pushes turned her face down, and then the real work began. It was only 10 minutes, but it was a hard 10 minutes. Because Miss M hadn’t been in the birth canal long, her head was perfectly round requiring a little more gusto. The last 5 minutes I barely got to breathe between pushes. Clay, my doctor and my nurse were so encouraging. Next thing I know, Miss M is here at 12:13 p.m.!!! Once again, I had a baby about 3 hours after arriving at the hospital.
She was quickly taken by the NICU nurses – Clay didn’t even get to cut the cord – but we wanted her to be okay. Her cry was a blessed sound meaning she wasn’t choking on the meconium. I could see her from my bed, and she had SO MUCH hair. It seemed like forever before they handed her to me, but it was only like 15-20 minutes. Her apgar score was 8.5-9 and everything looked great. We were floored she weighed 7 lbs. 13 oz. (that’s a whole pound heavier than Big J!)…and she was ¾ an inch longer than the other two! She didn’t look like either of them either. She took to nursing right away – girl was hungry eating for 40 minutes!! Her body temp was a little low so we spent some more time cuddling skin to skin with warm blankets over her. What a blessedly surreal feeling. We have 3 kids!
Mom, Kristi, and Kadyn came back about 1:15 p.m., but had to check her out while she was warming up. Mom and Kadyn laugh that Miss M was born while they took a quick bathroom trip. They had been prepared for hours of waiting, but they barely had time to sit between updating people and such. By 2:15 p.m. I was out of recovery and in my post-partum room. Miss M arrived back after her bath about 3:15, and the fun of showing her off continued. We were thankful for those that took time on Sunday to come welcome our little gal into the world. We were thankful for friends who watched our big kids so we could focus on our littlest one.
Mom, Kristi, and Kadyn picked up Big J and Miss M later that afternoon and brought them up to meet their sister. Big J almost knocked Clay down when he got off the elevator. There was no more precious picture than seeing Clay walk into the room holding Big J and Miss E – they were so excited. They loved on Miss M and me. It was overwhelming to have all my babies with me – I couldn’t help but hear the doctors telling us 5 years ago that we had less than 5% chance to conceive children without medical intervention…and here I sat with 3 babies all conceived au natural. God is amazing. We are so blessed.

We're now a family of 5!!!!
Little Miss M arrived Sunday, August 9th @ 12:13 p.m. She couldn't have hit her due date more on the head than the middle of the day. She weighed 7 lbs. 13 oz. and measured 19 3/4 inches. We are all so excited. My girls like to arrive quickly... we got to the hospital about 9:15/9:30 a.m. and she was born about 3 hours later - just like her sister! This delivery wasn't as dramatic as Miss E's, but it was fast. It was my least painful one overall for which I am very thankful. It was all so surreal. She's our biggest baby by a pound and 3/4 inch. She has a head full of fuzzy hair, and thus far has been fabulous. She's eating great and fusses only when there is a valid reason. I'm praying this means she truly will be the laid-back child our family needs! We've enjoyed the quiet, slow pace of hospital life, but we step into reality tomorrow when we head home. Yes, your prayers are appreciated!
Big brother J and Big Sister E were so excited to meet their little "stister" (as E calls her). They are ready for us to be home!

Baby girl is still content inside - just in case you cared
Friday, August 7th - she's still hangin' in... today would be a great day to welcome her as it's my Pop's birthday (he would have been 89 today).

Blackmail
It only took 4 years to get these blackmail photos for his rehearsal dinner. His dad was much younger when he was caught in his mother's heels! It's amazed me the kids haven't really gotten into dress up (especially Miss E), but this last week or so Miss E has turned a corner. The boy wanted to join the fun this morning - and much to his father's delight, his interest waned pretty quickly. Miss E, however, kept changing dresses (we have 4 thanks to Kadyn who was ALL about dress up back in the day)!
My "princesses"
(I'm working on helping him understand he is a prince, but it's a slow concept to grasp apparently.)

I honestly did not force this - he asked and I obliged. Who am I to put him in a box?
Showing me how he can fly (he was wearing a Tinkerbell dress).
She's so proud!

Real Gone
No, no baby girl yet. We've just been busy hanging out, enjoying each other, and playing with friends. Our hospital has WiFi in each room so we'll be able to update you quickly when she does decide to arrive.
Fun story: One morning this week I awoke to a VERY loud concert at 4:30 a.m. That's A.M. people! For 30 minutes, J sang "Real Gone" from the CARS soundtrack at the top of his lungs. I was thankful we haven't had a monitor in his room in months, but even with a split-bedroom floor plan we heard every wonderful sound. I finally went in to remind him that it was still night time to which he kindly finished in his inside voice (MUCH to my surprise). Heaven only knows how long he really sang. That was a long day.
"Real Gone" is their current favorite song; and we've spent multiple nights this week listening to it repeatedly for an hour or more before bedtime (thank you for the invention of the repeat button). Here's a short video showing off their moves and singing...

Splash Bash fun
We had another birthday party this past Saturday (so many summer birthdays it's hard to keep track). The kids had a blast at Lauren's Splash Bash. Her family has a great back yard and her mama knows how to throw a party. They borrowed a water slide from some family, had a kiddie pool, a slip 'n slide (complete with baby oil and "helper" to throw them down since there are no hills), and just their normal tree house & swing set. The kids walked away with some awesome popsicle holders to keep their hands from getting sticky - YAY for mommy! Another great party and way to deal with this crazy TX heat.

These last 2 pictures are of the girls born close together to me and some of the gaggle. The first is 3 of the 4 born within 8 weeks of each other back in 2007. In reverse birth order - March, February, January. The 2nd one adds the birthday girl who is only 6 months older. These 4 are known to be a handful when together. They act a lot like sisters, but we mamas hope they are great friends like we are!
Miss E's first "haircut"
While J is at camp this week, Miss E and I are getting some great one-on-one time. Yesterday we went to the "salon" in our home for a quick trim. I've yet to cut the back of her hair, but I thought it was time to straighten things out and maybe get some of the baby fine stuff off. I don't even think I cut 1/4", but it seemed to clean it up.
Miss E was too excited...

Need insurance?
I realized I never made an official announcement:
Clay is now a Farmer's Insurance Agent!!
It's a new adventure for us, but one we feel the Lord brought our way.
It's a new adventure for us, but one we feel the Lord brought our way.
So - if you are in the market for insurance (auto, home, life, other property & casualty) or simply want to see what Clay & Farmers can offer you, let him/us know.
I'll post his email once he gets home.

Cute pics
Just a few cute pics I wanted to share. Taken today because the kids just looked so darn cute, and I was actually put together since I had a doctor's appointment.
They love to say, "Cheese!", but struggle standing still and looking at the camera.

Finally, got one!
Attempt to get a picture of the 3 of us, but Miss E refused to join in.
Apparently she wanted a girls only picture.

Musings
It's been a couple of those kinds of days. Highs. Lows. Challenges with the kids. Productivity. Laziness. Endearing moments. Moments that make me want to crawl back in bed. Laughter followed by fighting back tears.
26 days.
I find myself tonight being a bit girly about things (not anything new for those who've been around me for any length of time over the last few weeks). There's this big change coming in our lives, and yet everyone else's life keeps going at normal pace. We surely aren't the only ones with big change coming. Some of my friends will be sending their babies to school (the real kind, not just preschool) for the first time next month. But still, it's a pretty big change happening in these walls in the next 3 1/2 weeks. WOW!
The third child is so different. It's hard to make plans about who will care for the children and such because it all depends on when Miss M decides to make her appearance. I remember with J I sent the family a detailed letter about how we wanted things to happen while they were at the hospital and in the days following. There's no point for that kind of letter now because there are too many "X" factors and too many changes this time. Even with Miss E's arrival we were at a hospital 10 minutes from our house and 2 from my folks. J was young enough that he was content to hang at the hospital with us for hours, and it was a quick solution if he needed to leave. This time the hospital is 30 minutes from home assuming it isn't rush hour. The kids haven't lasted longer than 20 minutes the last few times we've gone to welcome friends' babies. Mom is working full time...at a job that is 45 minutes from our side of the world. I have lots of offers to help, but everyone seems to be traveling at some point over the next month. I realized tonight that the likelihood of my entire gaggle (those in TX anyway) being in town when Miss M arrives is next to impossible. Makes it easy for a hormonal gal to begin to feel like this child's arrival might be overlooked. Don't get me wrong - I know it won't be, but it can feel that way. It's our 3rd kid - not as much "newness" to this as before. Due to changes in everyone's work situation, my inlaws won't be rushing here upon the call that we're on the way to the hospital. I need my mother-in-law's help the week we get home so she'll come a day or two later and then return with Granddaddy and Auntie Claire hopefully over Labor Day.
It's just gonna be different.
That's not bad - just different.
I've told Clay I'm looking forward to those hours of calm in the hospital when there will be more time just the 3 of us than we had with the other 2 kids. It may seem like a vacation after the "fun" we've been having with our eldest ones...and the anticipated adjustment period once we bring Miss M home. (I got a taste of how clingy the kids might be this past Saturday after we had a date night followed by Grannylou spending the night so I could sleep in. Once I appeared Saturday morning, Grannylou was chopped liver. I'm hoping Mimi doesn't get her feelings hurt if it takes them a few days to allow her to satisfy their needs after I've been MIA for a day or two.)
Anyway, I'm just processing this all out loud...I'm always a thinker before big changes occur... and now that we're basically ready for her arrival I don't have as much to keep my mind occupied.
Sorry to dump it all out here...

Our 4th & a little girl
We had a fabulous 4th of July. No pictures until friends share them with me, but lots of wonderful memories. After naps, we headed with several friends to a state park that boasts fossilized dinosaur footprints and a river. After a slightly treacherous trek to the river, we enjoyed watching our kids explore. We were so proud. The kids wanted to walk up and down for a bit (trying to find some cooler water), and they quickly became pros at navigating the slippery bottom. They loved throwing rocks and seeing the dinosaur footprints. We ended up at Blue Hole where they enjoyed jumping off rocks and floating around. I must say I was pretty proud of myself too being 35 weeks pregnant!
Then we headed back to a nearby town for dinner and fireworks. This was the first time we attempted fireworks due to the ages of the kids and J's sensory issues. Again, they made us so proud. J LOVED THE SHOW!!! He kept laughing loudly and talking about them. E enjoyed the smaller fireworks set off by those on the river, but the loud booms from the big show frightened her a bit. She just couldn't decide for sure. We enjoyed homemade ice cream and glow sticks with wonderful friends. It was a great 4th - and the kids did so well for being up WAY past bedtime. J keeps asking to go see the fireworks today...I think he's gonna love having such a grand kick off to his special day! (see previous post for the birthday fun...)
About a week or so ago, Grannylou stopped by on her way home from work. E took her back to her room so she could put Grannylou night-night. I had to grab my camera to capture E burying my mom - she was pretty particular about where things went and she was so proud!
